Our fabulous Cornish Feast event - the rain didn't stop us!
Well, plan an outdoor Cornish Feast event over open fires in May in Cornwall, and you have to be prepared for anything!
Annoyingly, the weather the previous day and the following day was absolutely GLORIOUS. Even the morning of the event was beautiful sunshine, and we REFUSED to believe the forecast could possibly be correct, that a storm was on its way…
Sadly for once, the weather forecast was correct. Almost on cue, just as the marquee was set up beautifully with ivy and fairy lights, the bar stocked and menus and flower jars on tables, in come the clouds. Here at Lydcott, you can actually see the weather rolling in from the sea… so as our day guests started arriving at 3pm clad in head to toe waterproofs, those sensible enough to have booked a cabin were able to hunker down until the worst of it had cleared. (Thankfully it did, eventually!)
So the first hour was ‘memorable’ shall we say, huddled under the shelter of our somewhat less-than-sturdy marquee, taking it in turns to poke the roof and release the pooling water before it released itself on us! Don’t worry – this was that marquee’s last ‘hurrah’ – for our next event we have fabulous plans for a significant upgrade to the facilities!
Thankfully our wonderful guests could appreciate the torrential donwpour, thunder and lightning as merely ‘authentic Cornish weather’! (well we try our best to deliver authenticity here – we promised a Cornish Feast, and I guess we delivered in more ways than one!)
Our amazing local chefs!
Before we get onto how INCREDIBLE the food and drink was, we’d just like to first mention that it was all prepared and delivered by the most wonderful local chefs, Abi and Natalie of M2 Catering under the most adverse of conditions. These guys literally deserve a medal. To pull off any kind of outdoor open fired cooking in a thunderstorm is pretty impressive, but to deliver it to the standard they did is something else.
Abi and Natalie are also the talent behind our new arrival meals which you can pre-order to be waiting for you in your cabin when you arrive for your holiday at Lydcott Glamping. (just add whichever delicious creation you fancy when you book your stay with us)
We literally can’t praise them enough. LEGENDS!
The food, the drinks, the people, the love!
Starting with a Cornish wine, cider or beer as guests arrived, (or non-alcoholic options for any designated drivers), the conversation instantly flowed, and by the end of the evening it was like a family get together, everyone was so comfortable in each others company.
The menu was exquisite – starting with appetisers of light tempura of pennywort, foraged from our field here at Lydcott Glamping only hours beforehand, Natalie and Abi fought the weather and the ever increasing quagmire on the ground to rustle up some delicious local Mussels with local cider mariniere & wild garlic, followed by the most delicious, succulent Gorse Smoked Lamb Shoulder with lashings of Gravy and crumpet. This was accompanied by beautiful Grilled Hispi Cabbage with Lemon and saffron Butter, Baby Potatoes & Wild Leek, New Season Allotment Salad, and mopped up with chunks of Homemade Crusty Bread.
As if that wasn’t enough, our guests were then treated to a wonderful Rhubarb Crumble served with homemade custard and (of course) Clotted Cream.
We welcomed a total of 20 wonderful guests to the feast, and it was amazing to see everyone chatting and getting on so well together so quickly. It was truly a fabulous social event. Much laughter and merriment was had, and the feedback we’ve had has been truly heartwarming.
We can’t wait for the next one in September, and already have quite a few tickets reserved, so be quick if you want to join us!
