We’ve been glamping in the UK and abroad for over twenty years, and we’ve come to appreciate the full spectrum of “glam” in glamping. Lydcott Glamping sits firmly towards the five star end of my (entirely self invented) scale: proper bedding, fluffy towels, a full private bathroom with hot water, and your own terrace and garden. It feels indulgent in all the right ways.The site is in a part of Cornwall we hadn’t explored before, and we were genuinely delighted to discover new beaches and wonderfully charming coastal towns and villages. The only drawback is that the area isn’t pedestrian friendly — there are no footpaths, so we couldn’t safely walk to the nearest farm shop half a mile away, nor to the closest pub 1.5 miles down the road. You really do need a car here, though the EV charging point on site is a welcome bonus.Emma and Rich, the hosts, get so many of the small but important details right — details that many glamping and self catering places overlook. They provide those items you only need a little of but feels pointless to buy as you’ll never use them up: oil, salt, pepper, hand soap, washing up liquid. Since our children were born 13 years ago, we’ve mostly stayed in self catering places, and it’s rare to find these basics unless a previous guest has left them behind. Here, they’re thoughtfully provided, and it makes a real difference. The only things missing were a teapot and a colander, but we managed perfectly well without them.We stayed in the Proper Job lodge, the largest one, which can sleep up to six — though it’d be a squeeze. We were four, and with our children now 13 and 10, we’re very aware of space. The kids used the converted dining area to sleep, as it was larger than the sofa bed, and thanks to glorious weather we most of our meals outside. As a family, we hadn’t stayed in a cosy glamping space for quite a while, so adjusting to the smaller footprint took a bit of juggling. But the setting is so peaceful and beautiful that the reduced space simply didn’t matter. Even though the road isn’t far, you barely hear any cars. A couple of wooden deckchairs on the terrace would be a lovely addition — perfect for morning coffee, an afternoon read, or simply soaking in the view.One of our favourite outings was walking the coastal path from Looe to Polperro. We had lunch in Polperro and then walked back — just over an hour and a half. There’s a boat option for the return journey, but it didn’t seem great value, so we chose to walk off our lunch instead.If you’re a couple, travelling solo, or visiting with a small child or two, Lydcott Glamping is a fantastic choice for your next trip to Cornwall. You’ll find peace, quiet, beautiful views, and a wonderfully relaxing slice of Cornish countryside.
