We are lucky to have plenty of beaches on our doorstep, from popular destinations with the usual seaside facilities to the lesser-known secret spots we can direct you to! Here are just a couple of our nearest and favourites, but there are plenty of other beaches within just 5 – 30 mins drive from Lydcott Glamping. (Click here for more locations, reviews and facilities information):
Seaton Beach (3.5 miles – your sea view from your cabin) is just 5 minutes drive from Lydcott Glamping, lovely and expansive, dog friendly all year round, and has a couple of great cafes, with The Beach House being our favourite spot for coffee / lunch / a cold beer! Seaton beach has a river joining it, so there is a fresh water pool leading down to the sea – again great if you’re taking the dog, and great for younger kids who prefer to paddle without going in the sea itself. We also love the (2 miles each way) woodland walk between Seaton Beach and Hessenford which runs along the riverbank – and The Copley Arms in Hessenford is a great spot for a post-walk beer or lunch – and is also dog friendly.
Millendreath Beach (3.5 miles) is a couple of miles drive in the direction of Looe, with water sports for hire and a beach bar – however it doesnt allow dogs between April-Sept.
Tregantle Beach and Whitsand Bay (8 miles) are our top tips to avoid the crowds. Well worth the walk down the cliffs, but note there are no facilities once you get there, so take everything you might need with you! It’s about a 15-20 minute drive from Lydcott Glamping.
Visit the South West Coast Path to see their walk-finder, distance calculator and up-to-date route changes, day walk suggestions and safety advice. Use our postcode PL13 1QJ to search suggested routes within your chosen radius.
Here are some of our favourite local stomping grounds:
MINIONS – Minions is Cornwall’s highest village, with absolutely stunning scenery. Discover stone circles, the Cheesewring (a geological masterpiece, created over millions of years) and wild walking on the moors. Minions car park is only 15-20 mins drive from Lydcott Glamping.
GOLITHA FALLS – a series of spectacular cascades through a steep sided gorge. Walk through the ancient woodland and be sure to enjoy a famous hot chocolate or something to eat at Inkie’s Smokehouse situated in the car park – really a treat not to be missed! Free admission and parking too – what’s not to love?!
KILMINORTH PATH – a favourite walk in Looe (a doggie paradise) – also has parking which is a bonus! From Millpool car park, walk towards Kilminorth Woods at the end of the car park. There are several circular routes to follow, well signposted.
CARDINHAM WOODS – woodland walks with lovely cafe (great cake!) and bike hire centre.
SEATON BEACH – HESSENFORD WOODLAND WALK – We (and our dogs!) absolutely love the (2 miles each way) woodland walk between Seaton Beach and Hessenford which runs along the riverbank – and The Copley Arms in Hessenford is a great spot for a mid-walk beer or lunch – and is also dog friendly. Park at Seaton Beach and head up into the woods from there.
SEATON BEACH – DOWNDERRY – from Seaton Beach, head left around to Downderry (a short 20 minute walk) and enjoy a drink or lunch at the pub on the cliff (incredible sea views!) before walking back again.
SW COAST PATH LOOE – TALLAND BAY – POLPERRO – We love parking by Hannafore beach in Looe and walking to Polperro via Talland Bay, then you can get the bus back to Looe from Polperro. If you set off early you can be in Polperro for lunch (we recommend The Blue Peter or The 3 Pilchards, but lots of other lovely options too). It’s a good 4 mile walk with lots of ups and downs but well worth it for the scenery! If you’re lucky you can even get a boat back to Looe, weather dependent!
LANTIC BAY – POLRUAN – Beautiful walk from Lantic Bay to Polruan village (almost 2 miles) – where you can then take the passenger ferry across the picturesque estuary to Fowey, for a wander around the town and maybe a spot of lunch. Return via the same route. Allow at least 5 hours for the whole trip.
LYDCOTT GLAMPING – HESSENFORD (& THE COPLEY ARMS) CIRCULAR WALK – There is a lovely circular walk from Widegates down through the woods, over a stream, and ending up in Hessenford- where there is a handy pub for a post-walk pint! The direct walk back up to Widegates from Hessenford is a steep road with no footpath though, so please take care. Alternatively, you can take the track off to the left just as you start up the road, and this brings you along a farm road via Trelowia and out by the Farm Shop in Widegates.
