Glamping in Autumn

Glamping in Autumn at Lydcott
It's firepit season at Lydcott Glamping

Autumn is the time of year when the nights are drawing in (= clear starry skies!), the weather starts getting cooler (= firepits and blankets season!) and Cornwall becomes less busy (=bonus!).

Some might say its the best time to come glamping!

(And even without the firepit, you wont be cold as all our cabins are fully heated!)

Enjoy exploring Cornwall in Autumn

The kids have gone back to school, and with them the majority of the summer crowds. But the weather can still be just as good so it’s a great time of year to explore Cornwall all by yourself.

Here are a few reasons why Cornwall is great in Autumn:
  • FOODIE FESTIVALS – it’s the best time to visit for those foodies amongst us!
  • 15th Sept – Looe Food and Drink Festival with our fabulour Ben Palmer (of Great British Menu fame) along with his South West competitors. Not to be missed!
  • SURFING Whilst spring is a great time for surf, the water is still cold. In autumn you get pretty much the same quality, long range swells but the water is about 5 C warmer. Also, you have the bonus of there not being ninety people all trying to catch the same wave!
  • HAVE THE BEST BEACHES TO YOURSELVES (and we can tell you where the best beaches are too!)
  • ENJOY THE TOURIST ATTRACTIONS WITHOUT THE QUEUES
  • GO STORM WATCHING You might even get to do this from the comfort of your cabin!
  • WOODLAND WALKS Autumn arguably rivals spring with its dazzling display of reds and golds. This is the perfect time of year to get on your wellies and head out for some woodland walks. Mid October to mid-November are the best times to catch the autumn colours.
  • THE LIGHT! It’s a photographer’s dream this time of year – the low sun lighting up your landscape can transform an average photo into an absolute corker. And with the evenings drawing in, you can capture an amazing sunset at the beach and be home for dinner! (or have dinner at the beach – we recommend The Beach House Seaton – incredible food and even better views)
  • CHEAPER STAYS! Not forgetting, our nightly rates are lower out of peak season – so you can holiday for less, or stay longer for the same price – bonus!
Enjoy or avoid the fireworks - either way we're here for you

Fireworks – love them or hate them?

Either way, we’re here for you.

We don’t allow fireworks on site – but we do welcome dogs. We are also rurally located so you can come to stay at Lydcott Glamping with your furry friends and be reassured they’ll be safe from the anxiety-inducing noises of bonfire night.

For those who do enjoy fireworks – you have options! We are fabulously located so that if you wish you can simply watch the various fireworks displays from afar along the coast towards Plymouth (but theyre far enough away to not hear them) – or we are lucky to have several fantastic fireworks displays held locally in surrounding villages. When you book we can advise where and when the best displays are on!

Stargazing

Here at Lydcott Glamping we are very lucky to be close to Bodmin Moor, the first International Dark Sky Place designation in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Not only do we have the beautiful open skies here with no light pollution nearby, but we also have peace and quiet in our gorgeous rural spot, with stunning views across the fields and to the sea.

Star-gazing opportunities are at their best in the darker autumn and winter months – so why not come and experience our little slice of paradise when the stargazing opportunities are at their very best. We can even provide you with a telescope – see our ‘optional extras‘ you can add to your booking.

Our top firepit tips

Lighting your firepit

Start by placing about 5-10 pieces of kindling wood in a wigwam type formation onto the base of the firepit. Pop a firelighter underneath (we provide firelighters for you in your cabin) – light it using the lighter we also provide for you – and once the kindling has caught, add a larger log or two to get the full fire going. Remember a fire needs oxygen so don’t pile logs directly on top of each other as you’ll choke it – make sure there’s air between and around them to feed the fire. Sit back and enjoy the warmth of the dancing flames and the starlit sky!

If you have any trouble lighting your firepit, just drop us a message and we’d be happy to help get it going for you.

Simple firepit feast ideas

Jacket spuds: simply double-wrap a jacket potato in tin foil with some oil, salt and pepper, and bury it in the hot coals of your firepit. Leave it to cook until crispy on the outside and tender inside, about 30 to 60 minutes.

S’mores (of course!): Toast a marshmallow over the fire (we even provide marshmallow toasting forks in your cabin) – then when it’s the perfect meltiness for your liking, make a sandwich around it with a square of your favourite kind of chocolate between 2 rich tea biscuits, and use it to slide the marshmallow off the fork. Give your marshmallow and chocolate snadwich a gentle squeeze to let the marshmallow melt the chocolate, and devour! Repeat as often as you can handle!

BBQ: Simply use the grill provided to BBQ any meats or vegetables you like. Cook when the flames have died down a little but the embers are glowing hot.
